Kerloch is the highest hill of the foothills of the Mounth range that lie to the east of the Cairn o' Mount. Although isolated, this fine viewpoint can be reached via a network of forestry tracks.

The walk starts from a minor road at NO699916, where a track branches off southwards signed as a 'Right of Way to Glenbervie by the Stockmounth'. There is a small parking area by the start of the track, with space for a few cars. The walk begins by heading along the signed track, which is believed to be the route of an old drove road.
The track crosses pastures at first with a view of Kerloch ahead. After a couple of gates it enters forestry plantations, though soon a felled area to the left permits good open views.
When the track forks take the narrower right hand branch, climbing steeply through the trees. The route zig-zags left and right as it gains height; the surface is badly eroded in places and there are distant views looking back towards the Hill of Fare.
Eventually the trees are left behind and the track continues to climb across heather moorland. Look out for a path branching right that leads steeply up to the summit cairn, with a trig point just beyond. The view is surprisingly extensive; the tor of Clachnaben and the more distant Mither Tap being easily picked out.
The easiest and quickest return is to retrace your steps.
